    Hi everyone,

I'm having some problems with the Windows Automatic updates. For a while I noticed that everyday before I shut down my laptop, windows would install 8 updates. It would do 8 updates each and every day, and I've now noticed that it's the same updates that keep failing to install.
I haven't been able to install any updates since 11th Feb, EXCEPT one Windows Defender update. The last update to successfully install (apart from this odd one Defender update) was also a Defender update.
I have 49 important updates to install, the first one being "Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows Vista KB980195". I can list them all if you need them.

I can download them all ok, but cannot install. When the "installation" has finished, the screen says:

    Updates were installed successfully
Updates were installed: 24th Feb 2011 at 00:00 Failed

If you go into View Update History, it will also say Failed. The update will remain on the list of updates to be installed. Why would it say it is both successful AND failed??

I have done the sfc / scannow and it has not reported any errors. I have also downloaded and run the System Readiness Tool and this has not fixed the issue. I've added *microsoft.com to the trusted sites in Internet Explorer, as I've heard that this fixed the problem for some people. I've cleaned/fixed the registry and still it doesn't work.

We have Webroot Internet Security, and have also scanned with anti malware and spyware. None of the programs has detected anything.

Some forums say that this problem has arisen because the CBS Manifest is corrupt and to do a re-install of Windows, but we don't have the disc as Vista came already on the laptop when I bought it. But it's said that you should only do the re-install if the sfc /scannow process does not fix the corrupt CBS file - but the scan did not show that we had any corrupt files?!

I've also tried downloading the latest Windows Update Agent, and this hasn't fixed the problem either.

Error code is 80070490 - I've tried googling and looking on the Microsoft website but have come to a brick wall, as nothing works.

In case it matters, we did a fresh install of Windows Vista at the end of January - completely wiped everything and started again. We have downloaded and installed updates since then, but everything halted on 10th Feb. I can't do a system restore as the restore points don't go back that far.

Can anyone help me? Please?! We're not too bad with computers, but if it's complicated, I'd be grateful for instructions :)

    Thanks!
