The welcome page of Outlook Express (i have version 6) has a strange appearance. It no longer tells me how many new emails I've received, and I occasionally get this weird error message: "Error 502 bad gateway, Powered by Zeus Technology". Also the "Tip of the Day" window had a porn solicitation in it.

    Download Zone Alarm/install.

    Download spybot/install/update/run/reboot

    Download Adaware/install/update/run/reboot

If you have WinME turn off system restore before you reboot each time.

Also I was not aware that I needed to reboot after scanning with Spybot or Adaware There is nothing in their info that says it is necessary to reboot. I did reboot after intitial installation of those programs, though I did not disable system restore at that time.

I have been thinking about purchasing Symantec Internet Security that includes a firewall for home computers. How would you compare this to Zone Alarm?

Also, run your antivirus program and then go to Start, Run, and type in msconfig and go to startup tab. Write down all the startup items that are checked and go to this site to see which ones you really need and go back and uncheck the ones you do not need.

    Go to:

    www.zonelabs.com

and download the FREE version of ZoneAlarm. It is better than anything else you can get out there.

If you feel that the information you have received here helps you, donate to TSG to keep the site running.

I visited the pacs-portal site and got lost. I understand how to get to msconfig and copied the list but I can't differentiate the good from the bad. I clicked on The List links but i am too new at this stuff too really understand it all. Could you give me more specific information about the "list"? Do you want me to type my msconfig list here?

I like Zone Alarm better than Norton security, but Norton makes a good anti-virus.

You should have BOTH spybot and adaware. Run one, and then reboot. Then run the other. You need to reboot so that you don't cancel each one of them out from the other.

It may very well be you have more than one problem here.

For spyware, there's one more spyware remover you can try - CoolWebSearch Shredder (link to the download is at the bottom of the page).

However, the explanation of the 502 error I found says:

    "Resolving 502 errors - general
This problem is entirely due to poor IP communication between back-end computers, possibly including your Web server. Only the people who set up the network at the site which hosts the Web server can fix this problem." In this case, instead of "web server" it sounds like it could be that your email server is overloaded or having problems.

When you go to the pacs-portal site you will be in the "Startup
Application" page. Click on "search" and you will be given a page with the letters "A to Z" listed.

Look at your list of startup items and click on the letter that shows the first letter of one of your startup items. Example, to find out info for one of your startup items called systray or system tray, click the "S" and you be given all the startup itmes that start with an "S".

Read the keys in the upper portion and scroll down until you find System tray or systray and look to the right for info on this item and look in the small column on the right for the key for that item.

Do this for all your startup items and use your judgement as to whether you need them or not.

Go back in msconfig and uncheck the ones you feel you do not need.

Thanks for all the assistance!!! I'll get back to you with results from the pacs-portal site, or questions, if they arise. I think I'll contact my ISP to see if they have wisdom to share, too. I did't think of them intitially, as I thought of the problem along spyware lines.

Do you think Alarm Zone and Norton Antivirus could conflict?
