I have a dell and use Windows xp. I had an external hard drive that died. On my computer programs list are some programs that I need to delete that were on the external hard drive but still listed on my computers program list. How can I remove these programs from that list now that the external hard drive is dead? Or do I need to remove them if I plan to redownload the same programs on to my computers internal hard drive?

What happens when you try to remove them using Add or Remove Programs?

If that fails, try using Revo Uninstaller.

If you right-click any listing on the All Programs menu, one of the choices is 'Delete'. Have you tried that? I've never done it, but the listings are only links to the program, not the program. To uninstall a program that exists, you would use Add/Remove or RevoUninstaller (I use the latter frequently). But they don't exist, so I'd try just using 'Delete'.

Using the right click delete worked for some but not for larger programs on the list. I tried to remove from the add/remove programs list but it gives me an error message that there is no E: drive and says I need to reinstall the program. All I wish to do is delete the programs from the add programs list. I can not afford any programs to do this.

Get CCleaner, it's a free program that's similar to Windows Disk Cleanup.

Go to Tools > Uninstall, highlight a program you want to get rid of and click "Delete Entry".

Just don't use the Registry section of CCleaner.

Thank you Lunar, your advice helped a lot. I still have a few programs that wont delete but I can let them ride while I clean up the rest of my hard drive. Thanks to you guys, I have learned a lot here and will continue to visit this site. KUDOS
