    Hello everybody,

I am new here to this forum so please be kind to the Newbie.

The other night I was online and suddenly my antivirus(mcAfee) software when nuts. I was bombarded with stuff. Apparently the software didn't update automatically which is a concern. Anyway after I downloaded the latest update for the software it found the virus/spyware/adware etc and cleaned them up.

However, when I shut my PC down I get two programs that come up as not responding. They are :

    "windowname"
    "should not be seen"

Then when my PC reboots it take a LONG time to get to the point where I can run a program. It seems like there are programs running in the bkgnd but when I go to task mgr there are none.

The other weird thing is that I used to have an image as my desktop wallpaper. now when the PC boots it starts off showing the image then it will be covered by a blank screen with my icons on it. When I shutdown, it will close this blank screen and show my image again.

Please help me fix this PC. It am getting so frustrated I want to through it out the 2nd story window to see if it can fly.

    Thank you.

PS. My OS is Win XP home edition.

You definitely have some stuff that needs a security person. I'll see who I can find, but when they are done with you, you should think about trimming down those startup (04) items

How much ram do you have?

I would be more than happy to remove some of the startup items. I know that there are a few that I don't use anymore but there are many that I do not know what they are. I am very hesitant on deleting things that I don't recognize in fear of crippling the PC. If you can help shed some light on the situation, I am willing to try anything. I currently have 256M of ram at the moment. I know that I need more but I want to get this infestation sorted out first. Thank you for all of your help so far.

 Wow, well, then, THAT is going to make a world of difference. 256 megs of ram with Windows XP is PAINFUL at best....let alone the load you are running.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I did but I am at work now and won't be able to do it until tonight. Unfortunately this will be an iterative process that will take several days. I am limited as to what I can do at home with my son. Unless there will be somebody around late in the evening or early in the AM.

Am I supposed to delete the files marked by SmitfraudFix ? OR will the program fix them for me?

The instructions I gave you will determine if you are infected or not. I need to see the results of the scan.

    Do this also:
    Download win32delfkil.exe.
    Save it on your desktop.

Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: win32delfkil.

Close all windows then open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat. The computer will reboot automatically.

Post the contents of the log file c:\windelf.txt.

Seems you have a lot of junk in your temp folders so run this as well when you have time.
It will speed up the clean up.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

I'm not worried about how long it takes. :)

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log in your next reply.
