I'm not sure if this is a virus or if my computer is really just having some serious problems.

I am using a Compaq Presario v6000 running Windows XP Pro, sp3. I have recently (as in, in the last three months) done a complete reinstall of Windows ... these problems started within the past week.

I noticed the first time when I had had my computer on for some time ... maybe a few days in a row. This never used to happen before and now it happens even when my computer is on for less than 24 hours. I'm including hibernation time as "on" time; I often put my computer into hibernation when I am away from it. so I can keep what I am working on open to resume when I return to the computer. I clicked on my Chrome icon on the desktop to open the browser. Nothing happened; I have some mouse troubles so I thought I didn't click it. I ended up clicking on the icon half a dozen times, and the program itself never opened. I opened the task manager to see if it had opened a process -- and there were six of them. I tried terminating one of the running chrome.exe's but nothing happened. They stayed. I rebooted my computer and was told that Windows had recovered from a serious error, although googling the results of the EventLog dump didn't find me anything useful. I figured it was a one time issue. Now this morning I opened TweetDeck, which I had just been running last night, and my word processor RoughDraft, which I had also recently been running, and now both of them have multiple entries in the processes list that won't delete or open. Neither show in the list of running applications. After 10-15 minutes, an icon for RoughDraft showed up in my taskbar but clicking on it did not open the program. Via the task manager again I attempted to end it, this time with End Task and while I got the "You chose to end the non-responsive program ... " pop up box, the icon in the taskbar as well as the Task Manager Applications and Processes entries remained. After another 10-15 minutes the RoughDraft icon in the taskbar went away, as did the entries in the processes list for it. TweetDeck never opened at all.

AVG claims to be fully up to date, and I ran a scan which found nothing. I updated Malware Bytes Anti Malware and ran a full scan, which also found nothing. I ran SUPERAntiSpyware which only found a few ad cookies in my system, nothing it doesn't routinely find on any other scan. I ran TrendMicro's Housecall which also found nothing. Kaspersky's online scanner is not currently available or I would have tried to scan with that too. I am not sure if I do have a virus or a different kind of problem. I ran HijackThis after I clicked on both my icons for my programs, realised they weren't running (like the previous issue I'd had with Chrome when I did all the scanning and found nothing), and got a log file before anything happened with RoughDraft opening.

The contents of my HijackThis log:

    Code:

Notes: Tweetdeck doesn't show up in this logfile despite having three or four entries in my Taskmanager; Chrome shows up a bunch of times because I had had the browser open with three tabs prior to doing the log file. TweetDeck opened about 30 minutes after I started writing this post and doing the HijackThis logs -- the logfile states 0927 EDT, and it had not been running for some 5-10 minutes before I got the logfile after I clicked the icon, and TweetDeck did actually open about 0956 EDT.

I'm still adding the post because I'm not sure what's causing the extremely slow response time -- it only happens to some, not all, of my programs, as I was able to open IE without a hitch while TweetDeck and RoughDraft were sitting as empty processes in the taskbar.

Thank you in advance for any assistance or insight you can provide. I'm a bit baffled by this.
