I recently upgrade a win 98SE machine to Win 2k Pro. The install went well but after several weeks of operating, this machine is in trouble.

After receiving CCapp errors all the time on startup, I discovered that the subscription had lapsed. Went to renewal it, and Iexplorer would terminate everytime you went to the symantec site. When I did get in, it would terminate (end then go back to the desktop). I was never able to renewal my subscription. Ran Norton AV from the Symantec security check and it reported 3 files infected with a "backdoor.trojan" virus. Norton had no removal tool and when I try to run Norton AV, it's startup screen starts then disappears.

Then I tried to install Norton AV 2007, again only a startup screen then it disappears. Tried to remove Norton AV from the add/ remove programs of Win 2k and it was unable, it's startup screen starts then disappears.

Tried to install a AV program called AVinstall. Again, its startup screen starts, then disappears. Finally, the last straw was to install HiJack This. Installed to the desktop, started it, then the startup window, asking you where to install, disappears within seconds.

I tried to look at MSConfig, however the OS reports the file is missing.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

    Welcome to TSG....

To download HJTsetup.exe fromTrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

I've been able to do this so far
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.

However, right after double clicking on the desktop icon, the program terminates and never installs to the directory C:\Program Files\HijackThis. That's as far as I can go.

Installed programs currently on the desktop do run sucessfully.

I do not have msconfig on this machine. Can't find it. Used the post listed in another thread to help. Just did a repair of the O/S with no effect to this machine's behavior

Windows 2000 does not have System Restore. It also does not have msconfig.

I discovered a problem with my computer running Win 2k

It appears anytime I run anything with the word antivirus in it, the screen closes. I've tried running Norton A/V and the startup screen appears then closes in a few sceonds. I tried to install other a/v programs and they start then the startup screen shuts down. I can't even do a google search with the word antivirus or virus in it.

Symantec security center found 3 virus's called backdoor.trogan but had no removal tool. Tried a program called AVinstall but would not run.

Tried to install Symantec A/2007 but would not install.
Tried to install HiJackThis, but would not install. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi, marcocfi

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Lets attempt to take a deeper look:

Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
    1. Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
      • In the Processes group click Non Microsoft
      • In the Win32 Services group click Non Microsoft
      • In the Driver Services group click Non Microsoft
      • In the Registry group click Non Microsoft
      • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
      • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
      • In the File String Search group select Non Microsoft
      • In the Additional scans sections please press select All and uncheck non-microsoft only
    2. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    3. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    4. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    5. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

    Hi, marcocfi

I've merged your threads. Please post to this thread until these problems are resolved instead of opening a new thread for each program you are having problems with.
