Hi and welcome.

Is there a history behind the problem?

Can you access safe mode?

There is no history behind the problem. How can I get in the safe mode from this prompt. All I can get is the prompt is c:\windows\desktop.
Thanks

You can't. You have to restart, tap the F 8 key and you should receive a menu to choose safe mode from.

So, one day, you just turned the computer on and this is where it booted to? What was the last thing you were doing when it worked correctly?

[tsg=welcome] Welcome to TSG! [/tsg]

Try typing EXIT and hitting Enter. If that doesn't work, type WIN and hit Enter.

Thank you for your response. I have tried the F8 key and gone into the safe mode. This allowed me to get back into windows. When I shut down to PC and came back on again, I was back at the DOS prompt. Actually I was working on the PC and clicked on the dos prompt by mistake. Since then, I have not been able to return to windows (except in the safe mode)

Type EXIT
and hit return at the dos prompt.

See, there was a history to the problem ;) If you'd mentioned that little fact at the beginning, you wouldn't have had to run in circles testing safe mode for me :)
