I have a protected directory on my website, where if you try to view or access anything in the directory a window pops up asking for a username and password. I assume most of you know what I am talking about (basic Apache/HTACCESS/etc).

I have a question however concerning this. How would I go about making a PHP script that could take a username and password from 2 form fields (entered by user/viewer) and "plug it in" to that directory so that window doesn't pop up? As well as having it redirect to an custom "error" page if the login information is incorrect?

I know it can be done but I am not exactly sure how to do it.

    Thanks!
