I was trying an email game for the first time and got the message that I may not be able to play if I have a proxy server. What does this mean? And how do I find out if I do have a proxy server?

    Thanks in advance.

If you were using a proxy server - you would know, because you would have to set it up manualy on your computer.

Go to Tools\internet options\connections - click on settings (if your on dial-up) LAN settings if your not - you will see the boxes for setting up a proxy server - if they are all blank, you dont have one.

I guess I don't have a proxy server. So...can anyone tell me why I am unable to play this email game? It's the first and only email game I've tried, and I'd really like to get into it.

    Thanks again.

    Do you have any firewalls/routers??

    This may be the cause.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

On the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each Internet point-of-presence. A router is often included as part of a network switch.

A router may create or maintain a table of the available routes and their conditions and use this information along with distance and cost algorithms to determine the best route for a given packet. Typically, a packet may travel through a number of network points with routers before arriving at its destination. Routing is a function associated with the Network layer (layer 3) in the standard model of network programming, the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. A layer-3 switch is a switch that can perform routing functions.

An edge router is a router that interfaces with an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. A brouter is a network bridge combined with a router.

that is what a router does and your fire wall stops various programs from entering the internet and the other way round people or programs from getting into your computer

Ok, I tried it with the firewall disabled and it still won't connect to the server. How do I find and disable the router? Or is that possible? I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about.

Can you supply a few details about this "email game" ?

    Name ?
    link ?
how you are trying to connect ?

in other words - exactly what you are doing - the exact point at which you get the error message (and the exact error message)
