I caught a something called "pup" , as far, as my task mgr. said. I found that it had cloned itself several times into other obscure versions of itself. First, it disabled McAfee Security Service, by removing essential items from the ActiveX portion of the Online VirusScan program. Then it busily blacked out the status bar, start menu and deleted all my Help files and XP Restore Programs. McAfee and Stinger scans couldn't see it.

Finally, I found Lavasoft , from Sweden -- sleek and fast.
    Fixed the problem.

Now, I am wringing out my brain with the instructions on working with Quarantined Files.

I'm not a tech yet, but I would appreciate some guidance. I cannot say that I'm stuck, just overwhelmed -- I constantly convince myself that a nap would do me good. I take more naps than I should.

National Free Taco day? Good idea? I'm waiting with my plate!

go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Syscpy] C:\WINDOWS\System32\syscpy.exe
appears to be some sort of virus/trojan as far as I can find out, but not much has been said about it as it appears to have only cropped up very recently

it might be a good idea to upload that file to http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html who have a very good and uptodate virus check for suspect files, if it does turn out to be viral then follow instructions below in brackets to remove it.

( run hijackthis, if any of the below entries are left then tick them, doublecheck to make sure you haven't missed any, close all browser windows & press fix checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Syscpy] C:\WINDOWS\System32\syscpy.exe

    then reboot & delete the C:\WINDOWS\System32\syscpy.exe )

then Run an online antivirus check from at least one of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

I notice you are running 2 antiviruses at the same time. Mcaffee & anti-vir

having 2 resident anti-viruses can cause problems and lead to viruses getting through as both fight over it and neither manage to deal with it

Pick one you want to use, remove the other or at least disable it's real time protection and only use it as an on demand scanner as a back up in tha same way that you would use the online scans

If mcaffee was compromised by a previous virus and you want to continue using it, then you need to re-install it completely to overcome any problems
