puter speed

i have asus p4b motherboard and am wondering if there is anyway (settings change) or the best way to inprove the performance and speed of my pc
please explain any help in detail as i am a novice

i am running windows xp 256 ram
any halp appreciated

What P4 Do u have?
The Processors make your computer faster but other things can to like ram
and if your gaming a good video card will make a big difference but if your not into gaming much i would just upgrade your ram to at least 512Mb

More memory, 256MB is really not enough for Windows Xp. This isn't really a setting but...

If you get at least 512mb of RAM, preferrably 1gb in my opinion, you will notice a huge performance increase. It costs money, unlike just changing a setting, but theres really no other way to get better performance ;)
