quad core processor

i have heard from some classmates that the dual core and quad core to find out the clock speed you mutiply all of the clock speed listed by the # of cores. I dont belive them but i thougth i would ask somone who would know more about it b/c i am thinking bout building a new comp and should i but a dual core, quad core, or just a single core

No they are wrong, each core runs at its own rated speed and the sum of all of them does not equate to a total clock speed.

Don't bother will Quad core's. There's little benefit with having 4 cores over 2 with todays software, most of which is optimized for a single core system.
