I have read that it is a safe to disable dcom as a very small amount of applications use it and it tightens your security,is that right and is their a program i need to use to disable it.

There was a old vulnerability back in 2003. And Microsoft patched it. If you are not comfortable, you can block these ports:

135/UDP
137/UDP
138/UDP
445/UDP

135/TCP
139/TCP
445/TCP
593/TCP

I think blocking these ports will also cause File and Printer Sharing to fail. But if you don't share folders between machines and don't share printers, then its ok.
