If you are not really pressed for hard drive space, you are better off leaving that alone.
It tends to slow things down because the files need to be "de-compressed" when needed to run.
IMO, it's a VERY bad idea. Not only will it slow down the system, but it also complicates data recovery in the event of a crash. Hard disks are so cheap, that I just don't see the utility of this option.
