I'm having some trouble opening MP4 files in Quick Time Player on my MacBook Pro (OS X El Capitan 10.11.16).

I use a lot of video files and have never had this problem previously - they're from the same camera so this doesn't explain it either! Even when I open files that I have previously opened no problem, QuickTime Player says it can't open them.

Unfortunately, as I use a lot of video files I don't have time to convert each one to a different format before using them, nor do I want to download some crappy software to do this for me... Is there another solution?

    Thanks :)

Have a look at the Mac version of VLC Media Player:http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ If you decide to try VLC you may have to make it your default player so that it covers all the relevant file types.

    A few things to note:

    1) I'm not sure about the Mac version, but the Windows version is no longer supported nor updated. Assuming the same applies to the Mac version, it's time to find a new media player.

    2) If you insist on using QT, and it's not working on files that it has previously, it could simply be corrupted. In which case, I would typically recommend uninstalling, reboot, and perform a fresh install of the latest version.

    3) You don't need to convert anything (which isn't recommended anyway), especially just for playback, find a media player which supports the file types that you are using.

QuickTime doesn't do mp4 files. That's why you are having a hard time with them.
