 So heres the thing. I am a keen gamer, I especially like first person shooters but I have noticed that newer games are not running as smoothly as I would like. eg. Deus Ex 2. I am thinking of getting a Radeon 9800SE 128mb. Will I see a dramatic increase in my grapical performance with this card, especially Frame rates, compared to my present card listed in my sys spec.
Maybe someone has the 9800 SE or even upgraded to it from the 9000 pro.

    Cheers Guys!

As you can see by my signature I have the 9200 but not the SE version. The SE versions are the basic least powerful versions for lack of a better phrase.

The 9200 for me (Not a gamer) is fine with 128 MB but for a "keen" gamer you'll be disappointed. I'm a Radeon fan but you should try and scrape the $$'s together or save a while and go with a 9800 series. I know, a lot more money but if that's your enjoyment, high intensity games, then you won't have to buy another card six months from now.

If you look around you'll see prices all over the map. Here's just an example you might even find a sale at a place like Best Buy or CompuCare.

EDIT: Whoops, just re-read your post and you were looking at a 9800 not 9200 (the SE fooled me) but what I said still goes about the SE versions. Up it to the XT or Pro.

Look at this ATI comparison chart. http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9800/radeon9800pro/compare.html

I went for the 9600XT. It was in my price range (Hardware is a lot more expensive here in Ireland!) I read a good few reviews and bencmarks and decided that this was the best Radeon card for me. Farcry here I come!! :)

The next gen cards for nvidia are out to be followed by the new ATI's I suspect, if you can wait a little, the 9800pro and xt might be really affordable.

There's little comparison between the the 9000 and 9800, even the SE version. The 9800 is a class well above the 9000. The prices for a plain 9800, between the SE and PRO, would be best choice if you're a gamer. The DirectX 9 support is worth it alone if you get a game like Halo, UT2004, or FarCry but the 9800's are supperior in everything over the 9000. A 9600XT or higher is a worthwhile investment for any gamer. New cards are coming out that will drop existing prices down so you might want to wait a little.
