I have two sticks of 512 mb ram, but two different brands, both DDR400. They each work fine on their own, but when both installed my computer only shows 512 mb ram as being installed. Is my motherboard incapable of running to different ram brands?

I've looked around the bios for setting with no luck, and if I run two sticks of the same brand I get 1 gb. Also I tested the ram on my friends computer, and it wouldn't work with his other stick of ram, even though it was replacing a stick unlike the ram that stayed; In other words his mobo was running to diff brand but this new brad wasnt compatible somehow. Very weird....

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Ones Azenram and checking the other right now and the other is Vdata. I also notice while checking brand that with both stick in the first two slot when I turn the computer on it make a longish beep and won't go on, they work in other slots though.

the scan tells u what your maximum memory is. so if your max is 512 mb then u cant have both of them. that was the pupose of the scan

Will each stick work alone in your pc? Sounds like yes.
Ram matching requires ecc factor, cas latency and density to be the same on both sticks and it sounds like yours are not the same.

Do you have some kind of dual-channel enabling in your BIOS?

    Disable it.

They aren't numbers and you cannot change them, they are what constitutes the ram.
