i have just bought some 512Mb RAM and added that to the 128 i allready had. now, my system only shows 384mb. is it the case that my system is utilising all of it but just not showing it or is the rest useless?

Sounds like your machine only supports a maximum of 256Mb per slot.

Daves hit the nail on the head. Go back to the store and exchange the 512 for two 256 sticks and you should be ok. Also check that the two sticks you know have are both double sided or both single sided. If you have one of each, it can sometimes be incompatible and will show less ram then what you have. Ive seen two 256 sticks show up as 64meg.:)Another thing to try is take the 128 out and see what registers.
