    I've been having a few problems with XP the last few days. It's been randomly slowing down to an unusable speed the last few days and I can't pin point the reason. When it first happened I did some virus scans (it picked up a few Java infections which I removed), I defragged my drive and clean my registry. The good health lasted a day and now it's going from slow to usable in a matter of hours. I have mem tested my system so I can assume it's not my hardware; any ideas?

    Edit: It seems that I have suffered from a Windows Update Failure as I keep getting offered the same updates over and over. Could this be part of the cause?

    My System Specs:

    OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz, x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 2
    Processor Count: 2
    RAM: 3034 Mb
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, 512 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 80999 MB, Free - 19782 MB; D: Total - 205001 MB, Free - 42432 MB; E: Total - 81501 MB, Free - 49830 MB; F: Total - 109434 MB, Free - 14028 MB; G: Total - 152625 MB, Free - 6688 MB;
    Motherboard: Intel Corporation, DQ35JO, AAD82085-800, BQJO739003RY
    Antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

    Try performing a System Restore to a point before all of this started happening. If that isn't possible, at least to a point before you used a registry cleaner.

    Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

    Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

    The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

    Sadly I think this isnt an option; I'm terrible at keeping back ups and tend to use acronis over XP's System Restore option which is left off (seemed like a good idea at the time) and the last image disk I could find was from May. Especially since I rarely come across this sort of issue; I'm quite a safe user.

    Click Start > Run > type msconfig

    Select the Startup tab.

    You can uncheck just about everything in there but AVG, snpstd3 and amd_dc_opt.

    ===================================================================
    Click Start > Run > type services.msc

    Locate the following services and change their Startup Type from Automatic to Manual:

    Java Quick Starter

    NVIDIA Display Driver Service

    Windows Installer

    ===================================================================
    Click Start > Run > type wuaucpl.cpl

    Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

    ===================================================================

    Reboot the computer.

    After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.
