Have WINXP and a home network. How do I get rid of the "read only" attribute as regards a folders attributes? I go to a folder in Windows Explorer, right click and then properties and uncheck the read only box (which is slightly greyed out), go to apply and then okay. When I return to this box, the read only box is checked again. Went to cmd.exe and tried to change the read only attribute but no luck.

You have to do it from the Admin account(Admin account and User account with admin access may not have the same permissions). Also, the files in question may be copy protected so you can't do anything with them anyway.
    Or try safemode.
