Before I mention anything although I'm talking about photoshop here it's largely a folder/file problem I'm having, not a photoshop specific problem.

I have a personal project that I've been working on, and I keep my photoshop saves in this one folder. When I save an image (call it A for reference), everything appears to be fine. I then close image A, then access the folder I saved it in (usually to work on something else thats in that folder). But when I access the folder, if image A I was previously working on is in there, the computer freezes for a second, then the folder, desktop icns, the taskbar, everything vanishes, and all that's left is the mouse arrow. After about ten seconds or so, everything starts to come back in to view, but the folder has closed itself. Or so it might appear, I'm not sure if it's actually still open, because after this incident something stranger happens.

When I open the folder again, and try to modify, move or rename image A, it comes up with a message window telling me that it can't be done because it's being used by another program and that I should close all other programs using it and try again. But this happens even if there are no other programs open.

The only way I can get access to image A is by restarting the computer. And even when there's nothing else open, if this fuss has happened in that session, then a window will appear with a loading bar (and an 'End program' button), and it appears to be trying to close a program, even though there's none open.

This happens all the time, it gets very annoying having to restart the computer all the time. Is there any way to prevent or cure this problem? If not, I'm even just curious as to what causes it. Oh, I forgot to mention that this has happened on a previous computer with the same OS.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to TSG....

What version of Photoshop are you using?

    Is it a legal version?

Also some more system specs if you could like amount of RAM, processor etc?

It is a legal version, it's Photoshop 6.0 and Elements (I use them both for their different features)

Oh... lemmie edit the specs (if I can find them, don't know how)

I'll just copy what's on the properties page.

    CPU 3.20GHz
3.19 GHz, 192 MB of RAM

I don't know what those mean really... let me know if you need more info.

First thing 256 Mb RAM is not enough for using Photoshop and /or Elements I recommend at least 512 Mb RAM.

What is more than likely happening is Photoshop is not relinquishing the closed file when or after it is closed and when it is tried to be open again you get that it is being used by another program and I think this is due to not enough RAM to run the program. It is sort of like Photoshop can not keep up to itself becasue there is not enough room to work fast enough.

I would also suggest to go to the Adobe web site and check thru the FAQ's and tech support for anything on this problem, basically Photoshop is such an enormous program that it takes a lot of info to know all about it.

I....... sort of understand, so basically there's not enough RAM for it to close properly? That would explain a lot. Though I'm suprised about not having enough RAM because the program runs very smoothly in all other ways, even with oher things open.

How can I improve RAM? This is a very new computer so I'd expected it to be good... well, I was told that 256 was good... Heck I'm not even sure what RAM is...

    Thanks for your help.
