Sounds like a dead hard drive. Google Ubuntu, and burn the iso as an image. Boot from it, choose to install it just to see if it asks you if you want to erase the entire disk. If it says no drives found then replace the hard drive.

could it be that you have something attached in your usb slots?

In BIOS you can change your boot device order. is it possible that it's set to look for bootable usb's first, then your hard drive? You can access your bios by pressing the button for setup right as your computer turns on, it will show you what button to press on the screen (delete, or F2, or F11, depends on the system).

If it's otherwise, be sure to set it to boot from your HD first

Nope I've tried the boot order switch. I've tried to load off the usb drive. Nothing.
I'm going to try to boot off my network. But other then reinstalling XP Home, is there any other advice?
