I don't see anything malicious in the log.

What is telling you that youhave spyware and where is it located?

You've got some programs running in the background that don't need to be. The smaller you keep the startup list, the better your computer will run.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Remove the checkmark from:

qttask.exe

RealPlay.exe

reader_sl.exe

osa9.exe

wkcalrem.exe

Once you're done, click Apply - OK, but don't reboot yet.

Click Start - Search - Files And Folders, select the hard drive ( C: ) to look in, type in qttask.exe, then click Search. When the qttask.exe file appears, right-click it, then click Delete - Yes.
(Note: This file isn't needed for the operation of QuickTime, and it's known to generate error messages)

Now, you can reboot.

When the SCU window appears during reboot, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After you've done the above, run another scan with HijackThis, then post a new log here.

smash,

The HijackThis analyzer is not a reliable tool to depend on and it often flags valid applications as nasties. This is why we don't recommend that it be used unless you know what you're doing and can interpret the results.

I must ask that you stop posting this as a fix in any threads.

Thank you.

You may be well-meaning, but your advice isn't good. Where are you getting the information from that you posted?

Never mind. I just found out after reading your other post.

Hi Flavallee I followed your instructions but reader, osa9 and wkcalrem were not in my StartUp, I did uncheck some items though a few days ago so perhaps these 3 had already been unchecked. I deleted qttask from my C Drive although it is still in my E Drive which I do not use for the Internet. Reboot seems to be a Dos file so why is it in XP?. Also according to my Norton Firewall logs svchost.exe, lsass.exe, and alg.exe appear, and even when I am not doing anything on the Internet bytes are being sent which I thought must be spyware sending out information.
Here is my new log.

I didn't notice earlier that you're using an older version(1.99.0) of HijackThis. Replace it with version 1.99.1, then post a new log here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK.

Click the + in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion.

Click directly on Run to expose its entries in the right pane.

If reader_sl.exe, wkcalrem.exe, or osa9.exe are in there, right-click each one, then click Delete - Yes.

Repeat the steps with HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Run.

Hi Flavallee. I can find no trace of the 3 items after I ran REGEDIT.
I went to Add/Remove Programmes and HiJack This was version 1.99.1, but when I clicked on the shortcut icon Version 1.99 opened. I can find no trace of HiJack This when I go to Programmes. I am sure I downloaded 1.99.1 as I only did this last week. Obviously 1.99.1 is somewhere on my computer but how do I find it and how do I delete 1.99. Sorry to cause all these problems. Roger

Do a "find/search" for the HijackThis.exe file and see if there are multiple copies in difference locations. If there is, delete the older version.

I did a search and found over 15 HiJack This items although some relate to my Windows 98SE hard drive. I clicked on 1.99.1 and here is the scan.

The correct file name is HijackThis.exe and not "HiJack This", which is why you got several other hits when you did a search for the file.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Do another scan, then select and fix

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Programs - Startup and see if "Microsoft Office" and "Microsoft Works Calender Reminder" appear in the Startup sub-menu. If they do, right-click them, then click Delete - Yes.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Post a new log here afterwards.

Run another scan with HijackThis, then select and fix:

O4 - Startup: Reboot.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
