    Hi
    I have a 1TB iomega Select Desktop Hardrive.
    I have used it to back up data, but never had the need to restore any of the data.
    Now I need to access the Ext HD ands restore some of the data.

    I have connected the Ext HD on 2 machines and in both cases the Ext HD is not recognised.

    Question - How long does ity take for a PC to recognise the EXt Hard Disk?

    Is there something I am doing wrong?

    It only takes 10 to maybe 30 seconds from the time you pw ON the external until you can access the drive.

    External drives are just not as reliable as an internal drive. This is for a few reasons;
    1 The extra interface of the enclosure. This can fail and the drive be just fine.
    2 Shock damage from you moving the external around, etc
    3 Heat. External drives are NOT made for continuous duty. Unless they have a cooling fan [which almost none do] they are made to switch ON and make a backup then switch OFF.

    Have you tried opening the enclosure and connecting the drive as an internal drive?

    Thanks for the help. I suspect that it is most likely been damaged by moving around. Went and bought a new one today and wioll try to take better care of this one.
