I want to replace the USB ADSL modem (that's coming with
our Broadband package next week) with a decent Firewall
Router that I can hook directly into our Ethernet LAN and
    use as our internet gateway.

Anyone have any recommendations for a suitable model?

    Cheers in advance.

I would reccommend The Netgear RP614:
    http://www.computers4sure.com/product.asp?ProductID=1143669&CatID=862&IID=855

Although for a few dollars more you can get the MR814 which is the same thing except it support wireless as well in case you ever decide to go that route. If you don't right away, it still has 4 ports like the RP614 so you can use it for a wired network too:
    http://www.computers4sure.com/product.asp?ProductID=1222017&CatID=1076&IID=862

There are more expensive models available but it doesn't sound like you need anything fancy.

The router alone will not be able to replace a modem, you will still require a modem.

Typically here in the UK, a ADSL connection comes with a
USB modem. So essentially, I'll need to replace this with
a modem that has an ethernet RJ45 connection?

    Cheers

There is no Ethernet jack in the modem? Only USB? Wow I don't think I've ever seen that here in the US. The USB modems here usually have both USB and Ethernet.

Yes, in that case, you would have to replace the modem with one that had a jack for an Ethernet cable....

    Hi James,

If you wait till the end of September you will be able to buy the Netgear DG834 from www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk and according to me this will be one of the best devices for a while and at a very good price. £94

    Hope this helps

Yes, it's just a USB modem designed for use on a single PC - I
have one at home, though it's a different model.

Thanks. I suppose the next question is which ADSL modem
to buy to go with a router like this?

*EDIT* - ah, no wait - I see these Netgear models are "all-in-one"
thingies? That's just about perfect, then :)
