    Hey, my processor is old and slow and it's time for an upgrade. I'm looking for something *substantially better* but not extreme high end. I'm looking to spend around... $250.

    This is my rig here, could anyone recommend a CPU upgrade you feel would be reliable and fast for midrange price?

    Thanks :)

    Hmm the problem is with that motherboard that you have is that it is very out of date now. It is the old Intel 775 socket that is no longer used. If you were to do a proper upgrade you would have to change the Motherboard, RAM, and CPU. This is what you can get for $250;

    Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157215
    CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103858
    RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139040

    Benchmarks for CPU's

    Intel Dual Core - 1126
    AMD Hex Core - 5823

    That should be a easily noticeable improvement. Just a quick final question though. What power supply do you have in this computer? Is it a custom built one or a factory built one?

    It's custom built, an Antec psu, 530w, 36A.

    Now, I'm looking for a significant performance upgrade, so if I have to spend more money -- upgrading my mobo and my ram too, I don't really so much mind. I wouldn't want to upgrade it all for so little value that the performance increase is barely noticeable, you know?

    The Components that Jack-O-Bytes linked you to would be a killer increase over what you presently have. I would not normally recommend Asrock Motherboards, but that one is decent. I would definitely Stress that you are going to need a higher wattage Power Supply though.

    that new line of intel i3,i5 CPUs are amazing. for under $200 u can get a gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3 motherboard, an i3 2100 sandybridge intel CPU. for another 50 bucks u can get about 8 gigs of ram. i just bought all this stuff and im very impressed. the performance per dollar is incredible

    The phenom has much more Bang for buck that the intel at this price range. I would also like to change the motherboard to this MSI offering as the Asrock doesn't have very good reviews.

    These are the benchmarks of the following;

    Intel Core i3 2100 3.1Ghz - 3861
    AMD Phenom II x6 1075t - 5823

    There is a noticeable difference between the 2 CPU's.
