This will be a long tip so I will apologize ahead of time.

A friend brought me her business pc and said that it would post, see the windows XP splash screen, blue screen and reboot. So I disconnected her drive loaded a second drive with XP then slaved her drive. XP showed the second drive to be blank. (here is where the tip comes in) I reconnected her drive put in a bootable Knoppix 3.6 cd and could view and access the drive. Knoppix has a server service called SAMBA I started SAMBA (which defaults to a workgroup) connected another pc, browsed to My Network Places, logged onto the Knoppix samba server and copied all her filed off. Reloaded her pc with the recovery cd copied her files back and saved the world at least in her eyes.

NTFS Security strikes. Linux couldn't care a lot about security.
Using the Windows 98/me NTFS drivers also work.
