I had to reformat a hard drive since I am working on a friend's computer.

And I am trying to recover files with recovery programs. I was curious tho, if the person never saved a .dbx file and just used e-mails like normal, is it still possible to recover the e-mails? Is there some kind of log file or folder where outlook express maybe autosaves?

    Thanks for any help.

Edit: The OS is Windows XP Home edition and I think Outlook Express is 2003 version.

Outlook Express uses DBX files. The messages are in the DBX files. There's not 2003 version of Outlook Express. I think you're confusing it with Outlook.

To recover the e-mail messages, you have to recover the DBX files (if Outlook Express is indeed the program that was used).

hmmm...okay well this is what I'm figuring and correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll have to find out which program exactly. But maybe you're right and it is outlook and one of the more recent versions.

She never saved a dbx file even before I reformatted. But she says she uses earthlink, verizon and gmail. And excuse me for being an Outlook noob, but can't she just use the website to check her e-mails? because all the e-mails are stored on an online server right?

Not if she is using Outlook to get her mail from the internet mail. My Outlook cleans out the Web Mail and downloads it to my computer. I believe that there is a setting on to leave the messages on the Web Mail.

    Hi black ballon

Yes, the default setting is to download messages without leaving a copy on the server.
Using a browser and logging into the mail server can be used to verify whether older e-mails do or do not exist.

Has it been determined which program was being used?
Outlook Express or Microsoft Office Outlook?
The former uses .dbx files and the latter uses .pst files.

I don't use Outlook or Outlook Express anymore, but the following is a link for Yahoo Mail using POP3. It is similar for other POP3 web mail.
