I run Windows ME. A few hundred of my thousands of picture files will not show up in previews or when opened in a variety of picture viewing programs; they appear as little red X's instead. I have tried changing the file extensions as well in case they are supposed to be .art or .bmp--to no avail.

Why aren't they showing? How do I fix it?! I couldn't find anything on Google about it other than website graphic design issues, so I hope you can help me!

One trick that has sometimes helped me to identify mystery files is to open the file in a text editor like notepad. Sometimes there is text in the beginning of the file contents that gives a hint as to the file type.

Check your hard drive.
Start with a Standard Scandisk (in Properties > Tools for the drive)which won't take long.
Do NOT choose to let it Automatically Fix Errors.
If that shows no errors, you could try a Thorough Scandisk (which WILL take a long time) or download the drive manufacturer's utility program.
