I've decided to end one old website, due to maintenance requirements, etc.
It's already linked to another domain about a dozen times onto relevant pages.

While I see domains that automatically redirect to seperate domains, entirely, whenever the name is put in the url bar, is the practice frowned upon by the major search engines including google?

Not AFAIK. In fact, and I Quote from this article->
"A 301 redirect is key to maintaining a website's domain authority and search rankings when the site's URL is changed for any reason. It easily sends visitors and search engines to a different URL than the one they originally requested -- without having to actually type in a different URL."
