Hello,

I'm looking to start a website for my family as a kind of central place for us to post photos, links, and connect - we all live kind of far apart - and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, trustworthy domain registration service? There are so many places to register domains, I'm just not which one to use.

I came across netfirms.com - are they any good? What about bluehost?

I'd also be appreciative if someone knew of a good web host? I don't mind paying a couple bucks a month in case we want to expand the website into something more business oriented.

Thanks,
Jon

If you are looking for a private "sharing" area with family AND friends, why not sign up for Windows Live? there are a lot of useful sharing programs and services, including picture sharing, and there's Windows Live Messenger if you have't thought of that yet.

hi jonny,

it's good to see someone concerned about the security of their domain name registration before registering, because this is the root of security issues. if the domain name is not secure, the security of hosting and such is rather irrelevant.

make sure you register with an ICANN-Accredited registrar. for more tips, see bwdp's guide on domain name registration

I always use www.123-reg.co.uk to register domains. They offer web hosting at a reasonable price that comes with the domain as an extra option. This hosting comes with many features including a site wizard and POP3 email accounts though I personally use IX Web Hosting.
