I used the Microsoft registry Checker and did a scanreg/fix. It went though the "Repairing C:\windows\user.dat just fine but during the "Repairing C:\windows\system.dat" it stops at 4% during the "Checking system registry structure" part. It doesn't appear that there is any activity going on with the HD. I left it alone for 15min. and it was still at 4%. Should I just leave it on and it should finish eventually or is there something wrong?

It shouldn't take that long. Has it finished?

Okay, I started the scanreg/fix, it's at 2% and been there for 1 hr so far. I will just leave it alone and see what happens.

It really shouldn't take more than a few minutes to complete.

How large is the system.dat file?

I have no idea. How go I go about to find that out. I think there's something wrong with the registr checker.. After 4 hrs. it's still at 2%. But my computer runs fine.

    c:\windows\system.dat

Just right click on it and select properties. Check the file size. There is a limit beyond which I don't think the registry checker can handle -- I think it's about 10 mb.

Sometimes uninstalling unneeded programs can help, or using a 3rd party registry cleaner.

On the other hand if Windows is running fine, there's always the old proverb ...
