I got an error message after installing XP saying that some of my registry files are messed up and need fixing. I installed Windows 2 times and it still gave me the same message. I did a full format and all my drivers are installed. Do you need more info?

You may need to install to a cleaned drive.

The drive I used is new. This is the error message:

Mesage from Local system to user on 11/10/2007 9:30:23 AM

Critical Error message- Registry Damaged and Corrupted.
    To fix this problem:

Open internet explorer and type: www.registrycleanerxp.com
Once you load the page close this message window.

After you instal the cleaner you will not receive any more reminders or pop-ups like this.

    visit www.registrycleanerxp.com Immediately."

Is this really true? If so why would windows install files that would be corrupted on startup?

That's spyware or an installed program saying to spend money of some program. You don't need to. You might want to post an HJT log in the HJT forum.

    HiJackThis

Run the Scan and save log option.
When the LOG file opens in Notepad, do a Select All, Copy
Then return here and in a Reply Post, do a Paste

As well, the message could be coming in via Windows messenger.

    Shoot the Messenger

    No. It's an infection.

HJT logs are usually much larger than that. Did you get the whole thing?

Do these popups say "Messenger Service" in the title bar?

If so, it sounds like you are using an older version or (un-updated) of Windows (pre XP SP2). These type of popups often exploit the Messenger Service in your Windows OS, which after XP SP2 is disabled by default.

A popup blocker "thingy" will be of no help in this case.

You have 3 choices to end the problem.

    1. You can disable and stop Messenger Service by typing "services msc." (without the(""s) into your Run Box and disabling and stopping Messenger Service.

    OR

    2. You can use the free utility called Shoot The Messenger to automatically disable this unnecessary service.
    http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger...

Please note that Windows Messenger Service is not the same as any Instant Messenger program that you may have on your computer. Disabling it will not cause you to lose any IM functionality that you may have.

    OR (Best Solution)

    3. Update or upgrade your operating system to at least Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Just so you know now that it's been coming up a lot less than before since updates have been being installed. Could this really be an issue because its an old non SP version of windows? I have installed it on other computers and its fine. Or because the computer is on is older than like 5 years and windows installed all the drivers for this thing?

You haven't upgraded to SP2 yet? Are you planning to do so?

HJT is showing none of the 23 entries which are the services active.

As well, you do not appear to have any antivirus running?

I would recommend upgrading to SP2 and then see if the problem persists.

I have upgraded to service pack 2. Even before I did, when i started doing windows updates it stopped showing. So I am just guessing that it needed updates then. Also what would happen if I did do all the updates and it showed up again?

You upgraded before you run the HJT logs or since?
If before, then I am curious as to why your Service entries don't show, AND why HJT indicates that the system is not on SP2?

As pointed out above, Windows Messenger was the loophole that is disabled by default in SP2.
