In the last week, I have encountered repeated problems with the registry. I run Win 98, and when I restore the registry, everything seems to run ok. Then next day, Windows launches (eventually) without icons or anything accessible.

Obviously something is corrupting or wiping out my registry...is there a way to find out what?

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.

Well that was very frightening. Followed all steps as directed. (have already been running ad-aware and spybot (very current))

After restarting (after the safe-mode delete NavExcel bit), I restarted and received an error - 0winsock.dll missing, and insufficient resources - after which Windows completed loading, minus the registry again.

I had to restore from previous, and am leery to try again.

Maybe 4 years? P3's were relatively new at the time. Recently serviced (for another issue, but we won't go there), and everything is current and up to date.

The only change in the last week was having to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Internet Security Suite 7.0 (that was a real challenge)

Were you having this problem prior to removing/reinstalling McAfee?

    No.

But to get the Privacy Service to uninstall, I had to manually edit the registry (as per instructions directly from the tech support at McAfee)...coincidence?

Well that's not sounding too good. Did you create a backup of the registry prior to doing the edits?
