When I clicked on advanced settings for com 1 I get the following message see PIC below
How do I get write privileges to see the settings. I was trying to see if the FIFO Buffer was checked or not. I was able to find it ( FIFO setting) in the registry but still wander why I don't have write privileges and how to change that. Thanks

You may have malware that is preventing the access. Nothing else springs to mind. How about posting a HijackThis 1.99.1 and letting the security experts take a look?

Bump, not a serious problem as the serial port works fine. Just curious why advanced button
will not allow changes ( see first post)

I think it has to do with permissions for this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\*PNP0501

Make sure "Full control" and "Read" are both checked and "Special Permissions" is not checked for user group "Everyone". And the same for "Administrators" (if there is an entry there).

Thanks for the reply,
I don't see anything to change permissions under the registry you provided ( may I'm misssing something here)
Also I don't have a everyone group and don't see "Full Control", "read" or "Special Permissions" entries.

You need to highlight the registry key, right click it, and left click Permissions. Highlight "Everyone" then make sure "Full control" and "Read" are both checked and "Special Permissions" is not checked for user group "Everyone". Also, make sure no "Deny" boxes are checked. And the same for "Administrators" (if there is an entry there).

Ok, found the setting and made changes as directed. The full control was not checked.
But it did not solve the original problem??

Do you have the recovery software for this Dell?
No I don't. As I said above the serial port works just fine. On another forum a guy
was having trouble with his com port and someone recommended he turn off the FIFO Buffer.
I got curious and tried to look at my computer to see how it was set. No go.
At this point I don't want to try to fix something thats not broke. Again just curious.
