i seem to remember a while back coming across a thread that told what files on the hard drive would have to be renamed to allow me to reinstall windows 98se using my OEM cd - which is not an upgrade CD. this allowed the reinstall to take place even tho you hadn't reformatted the hd. anyone?

If you are just re-installing 98 over an existing 98, there are no files that need to be renamed.......

no, i am trying to install win98SE over win98, but don't have an upgrade disc. all i have is the full 98se, and a quickrestore from compaq that has win98.

Then you'll need to rename 'win.com' to win.old or whatever else you want to name it.

Hi folks,
Even re-installing a W98SE if it is OEM or not can give problems with Setup demanding an upgrade disk.
I'm living with it right now.
There is a way.............. renaming win.com etc .....

you're right, the link doesn't work, even tho i copied and pasted, so i know it's not a typo. i printed out the kb article, it's titled
"how to install win 98 into a new folder" (Q193902).

hope that helps.
