I have a problem trying to reinstall windows xp. First the symptoms. Computer shut down during a defrag and since then it has been a little slow. All of a sudden when I try to start outlook windows installer starts and tries to install office service pac 1 but asks for the cd and i never had it. Now it won't repair office, all other office products work ok, will not start in safe mode (freezes up) and will start nomally but takes a long time and ever since I tried to repair xp it does a chkdsk and finds about 40 file record segments that are unreadable. and stalls there unless I bypass the chkdsk. I can't boot from the cd as it stalls after it checks the drive. I can't defrag the drive. I also checked for a virus just before any of this happened and had my definitions up to date and all was ok. This hard drive is on a dual boot system with win 98 on the other drive and it runs fine. Any ideas??????

Tried that nothing. I recently did get setup for xp to check the disk and it found (took overnight) that "windows has determined that disk d is currupted and can not be repaired" As I said I have 2 drives win98 on one and xp on the other. Do you think a format and new install on d is the way to go?

Download from this link the powermax form maxtor to your desktop. then double click on the downloaded file to start the file to load onto a floppy. The insert the floppy and reboot . We'll see what that has to say about the drive.

If it continues to show bad sectors then try this program to try and repair the sectors. This will write Zeroes to the drive and all data will be lost but unless you do so your eventually going to lose it anyway. this may or may not work but worth a try. The zeroes it writes will put the drive in its original shipping state.

OK I ran the power max and it did not find any problems with the drive. Windows xp will still not install or repair on that drive. I have just installed windows xp on a partition in my other hard drive and I can access all the files on the problem drive. Now when I boot it up it defaults to the new windows xp installation but also wants to check the old drive for problems. I bypass that and it runs fine. I think after I figure out how to transfer my outlook pst (address book etc) I'll just format the drive and and change the master/slave and use it for storage.
