Reinstalling XP

    Because the cable company tech suggested it, I reinstalled my friend's XP. I chose the more drastic "start from scratch" option. I suppose that is why none of the previously installed software reinstalled, but why is the only icon on the desktop the Recycle Bin?

    That's the default installation option for XP, you can download TweakUI for XP and restore the basic set of icons with that. I know it's buried somewhere in the standard XP configuration, but I don't remember where. :)

    right click the start menu and choose properties. from there put the dot next to classic start menu and that should do it.

    Now if I could only get a quick installation of Works, Office, AOL, etc.:(

    It's actually in Display Properties.
    Rt click Desktop -> Properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop :)
