I ran an emsisoft emergency kit and it showed "settings disabled task manager and disabled registry tools"
I then put in to google "How to enable these settings" There were lots of answers, but most of them were for websites that had hidden charges and downloads. Can anyone point me in right direction to do this setting problem?

This is a common detection and depending on the data value of the keys in the registry the Task Manager and Registry Tools are either disabled or they are not. If both are working then they are not disabled. Emsisoft will detect the presence of these key and reports them whether they are disabled or not because they're not native to Windows until Windows 8 so something or someone had to put them there. The key says DISABLEREGISTRYTOOLS for instance but then the data value will either be a "0" or a "1" where a "0" would mean no, they are not disabled and a "1" would mean yes they are. Yes, malware often does this but then they would indeed be disabled. There are also other programs that will place these entries in the registry that are not malware-related.

In order to be sure, please post the actual report from Emsisoft so I can see the full name of the key and if necessary we can export it and take a look.

Thanks for that. It looks like you quarantined the entries and then they were restored. Did you restore them or did that occur automatically?

I would like you to export the policies key so I can see what the values are so please do the following:

Please go to Start - Run and copy and paste the following then click OK:

    regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3140029632-2552320932-1006077804-1000\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES\SYSTEM"

You won't see anything happen and it will only take a second. You will find the report it creates at C:\look.txt. Please open it in Notepad and then copy and paste the report here.

Also, I can't find anything on the following that was detected:

    C:\ProgramData\MNgfoSoBpO\dat\xVUrewSFVF.dll

    Do you recognize that?

I don't recognise the line of script except it has dll at the end, which, I believe, is some sort of file. Also if there was a restoration I didn't do it, and if I did it was by accident.

OK so the dword values are indeed 0 which means that these policies are not set to disable the Task Manager or the Registry Tools. But you are right that it could be remnants from an infection but not necessarily. Did you have an infection that you are aware of recently?

If there was an active infection I would suspect some other issues or problems.

Let's run AdwCleaner and see what it turns up. Please be careful to click on the bit blue button that says "Download Now @bleepingcomputer and many people click on an advertisement by mistake on that page.

Please download ADWCleaner. Click on the Download Now button and save it to your desktop.

Close your browser and double-click on the AdwCleaner icon on your desktop to run the program.

Click on the Scan button. It may take several minutes to complete. When it is done click on the Report button and copy and paste the log here please.

I'm just heading out with the dog for a walk so I'll check back when I return. :)

The walk was nice but it was pretty cold. :)

OK so nothing there. Sorry I forgot to update my canned speech to reflect the change in AdwCleaner from Report to Logfile.

I see you had a thread in this forum back in January but was that for a different machine? There seemed to be some confusion as to whether it was Windows 7 or Windows 8 in that thread.

So let's run FRST to see if there's anything that needs to be addressed.

Please download FRST (Farbar Recovery Scan Tool) and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version that's compatible with your system (32-bit or 64-bit). In your case it's 64-bit.

    • Double-click FRST64 to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
    • Press the Scan button.
    • It will make a log named (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run (which should be on the desktop). Please copy and paste the contents of the log in your reply.
    • The first time the tool is run it makes a second log named (Addition.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of that log as well.

This is the two logs. They have filled up all the spaces, and I'm not sure if the additional has copied in full, so I have kept them until you say ok.

I haven't finished going through the log yet but have a question regarding WebGuard. Did you install that intentionally?

WebGuard is considered malware as it's adware based and gets installed along with other programs. It came it at the same time as that MNgfoSoBpO entry that you see in the Emsisoft log so we'll remove it.

I also have a theory about those registry changes detected by Emsisoft. I think when it says it was restored from quarantine it probably means it set the value back to "0" so that the Task Manager and Registry Tools were not disabled, that is provided the original detections were set at "1" meaning that they were disabled. Of course I can't know for sure what the original detections were but those keys are fine now.

So, actually it's two theories. Either WebGuard created those keys and set them to disabled or WinPatrol created them and set them to "0" and possibly locked them so they couldn't be altered by malware. I tend to suspect the latter but again they are just my own theories.

I also see some remnants of Avast so since you're no longer using that program we will delete those as well.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it where you saved FRST (which should be the desktop).

NOTE: It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location (preferably on the desktop) or the fix will not work.

Run FRST/FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and then wait.

If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after the restart.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post it in your reply.

FRST and Fixlist are both on wordpad and are on the desktop. I don#t know how to get these files off of wordpad

I have managed to get them onto notepad. Is this easier?

You mean they are in Notepad right? They should be in Notepad not Wordpad.
