I just removed a ton of spyware on a machine. There are no bad or unknown process running in task manager now. Everything seems to be running fine except...

Everytime we initiate a search with a search engine, (Google, Yahoo, ETC) IE hangs. We just get an hourglass that does not end until we hit stop on the browser.

    1. Any idea on how to repair IE in windows XP?

    2. Is there any way to uninstall and reinstall IE?

    Thanks

    Start/ search/ and look for ie.inf

When found right click on it and select install. Reboot when complete.

I am having a similar problem. Did stechi's suggestion work?

I tried it but it asks for a SP1 file it can't locate. And I can not get into the Windows Update site to download it.

Even my Start Search is not working. Did you find a solution?

It sounds like the Qhosts virus.

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

The log may reveal the source of the problem.

    Things have changed slightly.

    Google
Whenever we type www.google.com, we are directed to a webpage that says unavailable. The IP address = 207.44.220.30.

    Yahoo Search
Yahoo web page comes up fine. Whenever we do a search, it goes to webpage not found.

Here is the address in the title bar
    http://www.yahoo.com/r/sx/*-http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=cmd.exe&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-top

Also, has anyone else tried the Right-click install on the IE.inf? If this would reset all the settings it would be great, however this seems kind of risky when everything else on the internet is working fine.

One last thing, All of the windows updates are installed except for xp service pack 1 express. Whenever we try to install it we get the error message: "The product key used to install windows is invalid." This is strange since we were able to update the other critical updates without incident.

    Thanks

I had the same problem stech1 and $steve suggested using HiJackThis to remove the following two lines.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2BC43670-C0BD-4794-BB11-F60F3E001DC5} - c:\progra~1\ddm\0\ddmp.dll

It worked excellent. System is running fine, search engines work, Windows search works, etc.

Stech1.........Are you using "selective startup" with msconfig?
if so you need to enable all startup entries so we can see where things are starting from.
As it is,there is nothing bad in your log.

    Thanx.
    ;)
