Ok so i bought a new laptop from gateway. The gateway MT6451. The guy at best buy told me that there is a lot of software bundled in this computer that can slow it down and if i pay them money they can speed it up. Well i dont have a whole lot of money but would still like to remove what is running that can slow down my computer. I am running on the vista, and i am using the 60 day trial of microsoft office. I look into the startup folder and dont see anything but i am wondering where it is that all this "bundled" software would be located. there isnt much in the add/remove section either. Any suggestions?

If you just want to turn off startup programs, post a HJT log.

If you're looking to uninstall software you don't need, go into HJT 'Open Uninstall Manager', save and post the list.

Out of curiosity how did you configure this machine RAM-wise? Your logs are for the most just applications that are present on the machine, not launched and running. But a machine can be slow just running the basic OS and AV overhead if it doesn't have enough RAM to begin with. You mentioned you're running Vista. I have seen reviews of Vista that indicate that all on its lonesome it needs about a GB of RAM to work effectively. If that is true and if your machine is equipped with less than say 2 GB of RAM that could be the source of your problem.

It is not in the least unusual for the retailers to offer machines that are woefully under-RAMed since this allows them to present a lower price point to the consumer. In my book the practice is deceptive.

BitTorrent
LimeWire
Skype
These three will slow you down.
From Wikipedia:
Skype accesses the hard disk several times per minute. This can be verified by observing the HDD's activity LED, or by using a file access monitor such as FileMon.[6] With regard to internet bandwidth, certain users are selected by software to act as "supernodes". Under certain conditions, Skype is reportedly willing to accept thousands of connections, but is stated to limit itself to 40Kb/s upload and download.

A few things that don't need to run at startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BigFix] c:\program files\Bigfix\bigfix.exe /atstartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"

Bigfix never has that many fixes, so it doesn't have to run all the time, just run Bigfix manually every once and a while. There are a few more you probably don't need, use the second link golferbob gave you to look them up.

There are a few things that should be cleaned up in your HJT log, a log expert can help you with that.

What I do when I get a new computer is leave it alone for a couple of weeks to sort of "burn it in". I then reformat and do a clean install of what I want. I have tried simply removing and/or deleting software, but it usually leaves bits and pieces behind that can be troublesome.
