I recently contracted Starware358 and it has been hijacking IE seaches and I have heard that it can steal personal info if you use IE, thankfully I use Firefox but it is still something I want to get rid of.

I removed it with Add/Remove programs and removed the entry from HijackThis and did a virus scan with AVG and spyware scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. There seems to be no trace of it but it is still hijacking IE searches.

Is there a specific removal tool I need to run?

    Thanks

Post HJT log and See if there is any of it left

Download Hijack This to your desktop
    • Extract Files
    • Open the file and click on the Hijack.exe
    • It will open and use the default path
    • Check do you wish an Icon
    • Click on Icon and choose "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
    • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
    • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

I see signs of a WareOut infection.

Bonk - you do know only authorized members are supposed to analyze HJT logs, right?
    http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

    jbezweb,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
    http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, Hijack This will launch. Close Hijack This, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new Hijack This log.

I ran the starware removeal tool but at the end it wanted $37 to remove it so I will do the manual removal a little later.

    Thanks

    * Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
    Click OK.
This will open a command prompt.
Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Hit Enter.
    Exit the command window.

    Restart your computer.

    Run ActiveScan online virus scan:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    Enter your Country.
    Enter your State/Province.
Enter your e-mail address and click send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new Hijack This log.

I deleted the Hijackthis entries. I can't check obtain dns automatically because I have servers running on my network and all PCs require their own ip so I put in my usual DNS servers.

I ran the DNS flush and got this error.

Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution.

should I ignore this and continue with the rest of your suggestions or is this really important?

    Thanks
