How do I rename the .avi files so that I can play(see and hear) them on Windows Media Player?

I'm using Windows Media Player 11 and I run Windows Vista.

I don't understand the question. Renaming files will not make them play if they do not play already. Can you explain the problem?

Is this all avi files or just some? What happens when you try to play them? Do you get any messages? Are these files complete and intact, so far as you know? Do they work in any other players (if you have any)?

One general solution that works for many avi's is to install the FFDShow DirectShow Codec.

I've installed the codec but I still can't play them. If I upload them to Photobucket, I see the videos, though. Strange.

What happens when you try? Have you tried another player? Are you just clicking on the files or opening them from the File menu in the player?

Chaos Queen:
Hi, my name is Cody, and I’m working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to help answer questions that users might have about their Windows Media Player.
I did a quick search on the Microsoft Support site, and found this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992 About halfway down that page, there’s a whole section on playing the .avi filetype in Windows Media Player. It gives a couple of options to follow through on if your player isn’t displaying that kind of file properly.
I’m not a technical pro, but if that site doesn’t give you the solution you need, please let me know, and I’ll see if I can find a few more resources for you.
Thanks,
Cody
