I have recently tried to do an upgrade of Windows XP, but since my main drive is D, I cant do it (the program assumes that C is your main drive). So please help me out, how do I change the letter of my hard drive?

Unfortunately, you cannot assign a different letter to the boot volume, not in Windows anyway.

Its odd, I'm not sure thats what I want to do.

You see, I have 2 drives and 1 hard drive. One is C (my boot one) and one is D (my main one). I have all of my program files and everything on D because of a virus that is now rotting in hell. So I either need to somehow combine the two drives into one (named C) or flip the names of the drives, which as Maverick kindly told me I cant do. So am I screwed?

You can do that as a step in the installation of XP . . to do that, enter BIOS ( Setup ) and set the first boot device as CD/ROM. Put your XP Disc in the drive and disconnect all external peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB, or wireless. Any internal USB card should also be removed.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" . . do that and you will be able to delete partitions and recreate the ones you want and proceed to formating and installing XP

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up.

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

You will have to reload drivers (Chipset first) and applications, After the installation, you will need to download and install SP-2, while windows is clean. Prior to connecting to the internet be sure you enable the XP firewall.

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!

Have fun . .wrs
