My friends computer is connected through a LAN connection using wires to connect directly to the main computer. However, when I was at his house, the internet suddenly said "Limited or no connectivity" and then I cannot sign on the internet anymore. I tried to click repair, but it said something about renewing IP address. I didn't touch any of the IP settings yet the internet doesn't work any more. Please help me out!!!!!:(

Well , that happend to me and I found that it was a piece of spyware that was doing it called 'WEBHANCER' if you have spybot search and destroy use that and delete it or you should be able to find it in add/ remove programs

I don't think that is the case because when I was over, I use Xoftspy (another spy remover) and I scanned the computer and everything but I got disconnected AFTER I did the scans

post an ipconfig /all for both machines also do the ping test and post results

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below

start
run
cmd

C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping {the default gateway ipaddress you got above }

Do a ipconfig/release and /renew...
Open up your command prompt and type in ipconfig/release... wait a few seconds and then type in ipconfig/renew...

If you click on your network icon, and click on the support tab, your probably going to see "Invalid IP Address" or the like...

Is this correct?

Can you ping your router AND modem?

do you want me to ping google again? and what do you mean by "was that when everything was working on when it seemed not to be working"? the internet still doesnt work. only his instant messaging program is working. I'll tell my friend to ping 72.14.207.99 later... i can't get ahold of him right now

just trying to find out exactly what the conditions are

so you can ping google.com but the only thing working is instant messaging

it looks like you have a good connection to the interent
but can you describe how its all connected to the internet
My friends computer is connected through a LAN connection using wires to connect directly to the main computer.
sounds like ICS
does the main PC connect OK

do you have a firewall on the PC or the host PC - sounds like the firewall my be blocking IE program from access the web
or perhaps a virus/spyware

can he do a restore to before the problem began on the PC

for the ip address...

as for the main comp it can connect perfectly. even if he had a firewall on either the host computer or router, that wouldnt explain how come his internet just randomly stop working. but his computer currently does not have a firewall. and he attempted to restore his computer but it will not work.

I'm trying to establish if you can do a ping when the internet is working OK and then also when it stops however, theres a bit of inconsistancy here
the internet still doesnt work. only his instant messaging program is working.
So from this i assumes that IE did not work at all - and therefore could be firewall
that wouldnt explain how come his internet just randomly stop working.
But now its random
:) :)

anyway, please post a hjt log and we can get a guru to decode and see if theres any spyware on the PC

HIJACK THIS:

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.
SO DO NOT put hjt onto the desktop or temp files.

create a directory say my documents/hjt

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:
