Is there any way to reorder the loading of the at-boot startup items. Reason I ask is that I have a MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Its software has to load before the special keys on it function, which in my case, occurs a while after the Desktop appears on boot up.

I believe there is third party program called Startup Delayer that may help

Per your suggestion, I downloaded and installed Start Delay. After organizing the load order and timing, making the keyboard driver first to load, I found that it made no difference; the special keys on the keyboard (sound control, especially) did not work any sooner than before. In addition, Start Delay identified 5 programs that ignored the order I had set for them, so I had to remove them from the Start Delay ordering. I, therefore, removed Start Delay program.

After removing it, I happened to look at the startup items (msconfig). Start Delay had permanently reordered them, putting itype.exe (the keyboard driver) first in line. But as I say, it still doesn't change the time to access the special keys.

I, nonetheless, thank you from bringing this program to my attention. I like to find out about things I don't know about, and Start Delay was one I'd not heard of.

Try moving the item from a RUN key to a RUNSERVICES key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run
    to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\runservices

Run Services items should start before the RUN items do.

There is no "runservices" in my registry; only Run, RunOnce, and RunOnceEx.

Create a new key called RunServices and add the value associated with the app you wish to start early.

I may do that. . . but I'm leery of messing with "mother nature" (Microsoft, in this case). There may be a reason that the keyboard driver does not load or activate immediately, despite now being the first item in my Startup programs. Its move from middle of the pack to the #1 item did not change the speed with with the special buttons on the keyboard become active one iota, which leads me to suspect that nothing I do is going to make that happen any faster.
