I am having problems with slowness and all other rubbish problems and I do have my three recovery disks. I am wondering if I can do a REPAIR to WIN XP with one of the disks, instead of a complete format. I don't want to lose some of the old programme I have downloaded. Now if I was to do a REPAIR, then I guess the IE would be either IE 6 or 7, which I guess wouldn't hurt.

    Your views would be appreciated.

    Regards:eek:

Do you really want to do a repair and create more problems? A bit of Ccleaner, Ausologics Defeag free edition and then update of drivers should make a big difference.

And maybe delete unused fonts as well to get tip top performance.

To repair Xp - you will need the full Xp install Cd.
The recovery disks will take it back to how it left the factory - and all programs will be lost.

Post a Hjt log - to see what is running on your system.

    Hijack this 2.04
    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log
    Start HiJackThis.
Click > Open The Misc Tools Section button.
    Click > Open Uninstall Manager.
    Click > Save List.
Save the uninstall list file on your desktop.
It will then open in Notepad.
Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box.

My computer has slowed down, and is erratic. It's a nightmare when working in Hotmail, when donwloading Internet sites. I have used every conceivable FREE antivirus/malware programme to scan computer, and nothing fpound. I've been using FREE Ccleaner and Asologics Defrag, and still no improvement. On a few occasions I have used Ccleaner Reg Edit and I do believe that when M/S has been updating that it became corrupted and Ccleaner most probably removed those files, and since those occasions the computer has become unstable and erratic.

I've had tried all suggestions from Internet advice to to improve the computer but to no avail.

Therefore, that is my reason for asking if a WIN XP repair would solve the problem. I do have my recover CDs for WIN XP, three disks in total, which I believe contain all the preinstalled software included in the purchase. It does state on the disks that "...may only be used for backup and recovery of your computer..."

    Regards and Thanks

Ccleaner - best not to use the Registry Cleaner.
Registry cleaner can and often do, cause more problems than they solve.

How old is the Pc - how much Ram is installed?

    Hi Blue,

Yes, I believe I found that out in regards to Reg Edit on Ccleaner, a NO-NO! As I believe this is what may have caused the problems that I have.

My computer is about four years old, Acer Aspire T300 CPU/RAM 2.489ghz/1015mb.

    Regards

Your Pc is also missing some important Windows security updates.
    You should update Windows asap.

Scan and post the logs from Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

I used Malwarebytes and SAS for a long time when the problem began and used them both in conjunction with my main antivirus/spyware Trend Micro and nothing was resolved then.

In fact I was satisfied with SAS, but then I began to wonder when they were removing more stuff than the other programmes, I decided it could have been causing some of the problem.

What I believe that may have caused me further problems is that I was advised to download TFC 3.1.1 (not the TLC Old Timer) and this programme also found a lot of stuff, which I removed, which probably compunded the problem.

    Regards

TFC 3.1.1 - is a Temp File cleaner - Ok to use.

I can only make my suggestions above - if you decide not to follow them, it's your call.

That's most interesting, as I went to M/S Update and they found no important updates, except this one:
"Update for Root Certificates for Windows XP [March 2012] (KB931125)".

Sometime ago I uninstalled "Silverlight" as that was causing problems to my computer.

    Regards

I appreciate your suggestions, I still have Malwarebytes installed on my computer, but uninstalled SAS.

Did the Hijack files I posted show anything?

    No much to worry about.
Update Malwarebytes - scan and post the log.
I'd download Superantispyware - scan and post the log.
Have I just repeated myself ;)
