I have WInXP. It has failed to defragment many files on the C drive for some time now, months. Can anything be done? Can the files just be deleted? I think it is leading to performance problems, as if too many Tabs are open in Chrome (especially with Facebook or other sites using Shockwave) the system really bogs down and stays down until reboot. The defragmenter always says immediately after defragmenting, if an "analysis" is done, to defragment the HDD. There's also many "REGISTRY" lines which are fragmented which it seems to not correct. Following is the last report...

It's normal for certain files to be in use and not be able to defragment them. They do not cause any problems. In modern PC's defraging a system has been discovered to have little gains for performance.

Post your system specs, you can use the TSG System Information Utility to get them: http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links
You should also add them to your profile.

You may also need a software cleanup.

That's an ancient computer, it simply will be slow with it having a Pentium III processor and only 512MB of RAM.

That's to be expected when you consider how you're using that computer and the wimpy hardware specs that it has.

    --------------------------------------------------------

What's the model name and model number of that computer?

If you don't know for sure, advise us what the product number(P/N) and/or model number(M/N) on the sticker is.

    --------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise us what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - exactly as you see it there.

I'm using Firefox now and the performance is much better. Less hangups. But still why can't I defrag those files?

    In My Computer, it says...
    Compaq EVO
    Intel Pentium III processor
998 MHz, 512 MB of RAM

    Silver sticker has...
    ENL/P1.0/20E/6/256cvn US
Compaq Deskpro EN series Slim Desktop version

512 MB of RAM is the maximum amount that it supports(which it already has), so there's no option to add more.

Frequent defragging of the hard drive is NOT needed, and it adds wear and stress on it, so stop doing it so often. Once a month is sufficient.

Have you run the Disk Cleanup tool and are there any programs that you don't use very often that you could uninstall? The defragmentation process involves moving files temporarily to another part of the disk before moving them back to their 'correct' location later, and I read somewhere that the Windows defragmenter requires 15% free space to work properly and you have only 11% free.

I can't find any official MS documentation to confirm that 15% figure but, if it is correct, it may be why defragmentation doesn't seem to finish properly (unless there are other problems with the hard drive).

As has already been mentioned, you are unlikely to see much, if any, improvement in performance, even if you are able to successfully complete the defrag.
