Hi all. The HD on my sons PS3 died and we were wondering, can you buy replacement hard drives? Also, does it have to be a PS3 HD, or can we get an external HD (like for a regular pc)?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think you can use an external hard drive to save your game's progress on (from what I've found from my searches).
However, you can always replace the internal hard drive. But this is a bit more tech..
Sorry if I don't have much info, I don't have a PS3..
Video Guide:

I SERIOUSLY recommend this one, it's an extremely detailed guide:

You will need:
(1) new internal hard drive (not a ps3 hard drive or external hard drive)
By the way, an internal hard drive is the same one you find in your PC. Its like an external hard drive, except sometimes larger, with no cover, and you can see some of its components.. Here are pics:

some screwdrivers
and some other stuff.. see the guides...

You can buy any standard laptop 2.5" drive to replace the internal PS3 drive. I replaced my 40 Gig with a 500 Gig drive not that long ago. You may want to pick up an external also though to backup your saves and stuff on the new drive with so that you can restore that in the future if you need to replace the drive again.

Just to clarify, a 3.5" hard drive found in a PC will not work. You need a hard drive for a laptop. (Although a PC drive would probably work with an adaptor. But that's kind of a pain in the butt.)

And all you need is a precision screwdriver set. Replacing the hard drive is pretty simple actually. Now if you want to replace the blu-ray drive, that's another story.

Sorry about that dude. I didn't mean to give incorrect advice. I meant to say that the hard drive used in a computer is the same as the one in a ps3.. I wasn't referring to the sizes, but you are correct. Thanks for correcting my mistake. You will need a 2.5" laptop hard drive to install in your ps3..
