I'm planning to buy a new laptop this week as my HP laptop broke recently. I saved the hard drive because there was no issue with it and I have all my files on it. I've found a few laptops online that I'm interested in but some have a SSD, I've heard that SSD are faster. I will transfer afterwards all my files on the HDD to the SSD of the new laptop. I hope the new laptop and its SSD will last a few years but I just wanted to know if I could replace the SSD with my HDD if I have some problems with it.
Anyone that has been using computers long enough will have a hard drive fail at some point.
I have not heard of anyone replacing a SSD because it failed. The usual reason to replace an SSD is to replace it with a larger capacity one.
I have two computers with SSDs. My desktop started with a 500GB SSD. I upgraded that to a 2TB one. My laptop came with a 256GB SSD. I upgraded it with a 1TB SSD.
BTW, depending on the laptop brand and model it may or may not support installing a hard drive. I know my Acer laptop only works with an M.2 SSD. There is no where to mount or connect a hard drive.
You could save your hard drive for backups. I salvage a 256GB hard drive from a laptop and bought an external case for $8.00.
I have had two however they were both first generation ssd from OCZ. They did replace both of them under warranty. I have not had any later ssd or M.2 drives fail.
In addition to all the good points @MisterEd51 mentioned, I would caution against the idea of replacing the SSD with the HDD, for whatever reason. The operating system will likely be licensed to the HP laptop, plus the installed drivers will be customized to that installation as well. It won't be a matter of plug 'n' play.
I, too, have had an SSD fail. As it turns out, it was also an OCZ, but I don't believe it was under warranty. Not sure I would have wanted them to replace it ...

Serge:
Buying a laptop with a SSD instead of a HDD is a good move because it will make it faster and snappier.
If for some reason the SSD in the laptop fails, you should replace it with another SSD.
Replacing a SSD with a HDD is counter-productive because it will make the laptop slower.
Thanks everybody for all your messages and information about SSD. I will follow your advices and might buy a new laptop with a SSD and save the HDD for backup. I'm going to close this thread now.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family
Serge
